There’s nothing quite as disappointing as taking a sip of your favorite brew and finding it has gone cold. That’s why I started this quest of finding the perfect coffee mug material that can keep coffee hot for the longest. So, do ceramic mugs keep coffee hot?

Ceramic mugs keep coffee hot for longer than most other materials. Ceramic is made of clay, which has excellent heat retention properties. Also, the thicker the mug, the better it can insulate the coffee from its environment. If you’re a slow coffee drinker, a ceramic mug is for you.

In this article, I’ll explore the science behind heat retention in ceramic mugs, discuss whether it’s safe to pour hot coffee into them and offer some tips on how to improve their heat retention.

You’re probably wondering, does ceramic keep coffee hot?

However, there are a few things to keep in mind when pouring hot coffee into a ceramic mug.

Avoid pouring boiling water directly into the mug, as it can cause it to crack or shatter. Instead, let the coffee cool down for a few minutes before pouring it into the mug. This will also help to prevent the coffee from becoming too hot to drink immediately.

  • Stainless steel: Stainless steel mugs are popular for their durability and sleek design. They are also great at retaining heat, thanks to their high thermal conductivity. However, stainless steel can affect the taste of the coffee, especially if it’s not lined with a non-reactive material.
  • Insulated plastic: Insulated plastic mugs are lightweight and often come with lids. They are great for on-the-go coffee drinkers, as they can keep the coffee hot for hours. However, plastic is not as durable as ceramic or stainless steel, and it can also affect the taste of the coffee.
  • Glass: Glass mugs are beautiful and don’t affect the taste of the coffee. However, they are not great at retaining heat and can become too hot to hold. They are also more fragile than ceramic or stainless steel mugs.

My Heat Retention Experiment

I don’t have a stainless steel mug at the moment, but I have a reusable plastic cup from Starbucks and a ton of different ceramic mugs, as well as a typical glass for water.

So, for this heat retention test, I used the Starbucks cup, two different ceramic mugs, and a regular drinking glass. I left them all uncovered, which is very important aspect of this as heat rises and escapes through the opening.

I poured 200 ml (6.7 oz) of slightly cooled boiling water (95°C/203°F) into the 4 vessels and waited for 15 minutes. And here are the measurements after letting them cool down:

  • Ceramic mug #1 (a thick Milka mug): 50°C/122°F
  • Ceramic mug #2 (a thinner no-brand mug): 43°C/109°F
  • Plastic Starbucks cup: 36°C/96°F
  • Drinking glass: 32°C/89°F

The test was done at a room temperature of 22.4°C/72.32°F.

As you can see, ceramic did a much better job at insulating the water, and it’d do the same for your coffee. It stays on the lower end of the recommended coffee drinking temperature, whereas the plastic and thin glass didn’t keep the water warm.

How to Choose the Best Ceramic Mug for Keeping Coffee Hot

When choosing a ceramic mug for keeping coffee hot, there are a few things to consider:

  • Size: Choose a mug that’s the right size for your coffee needs. If you prefer smaller servings, a smaller mug may be more appropriate. However, larger mugs can hold more heat energy and keep your coffee hot for longer.
  • Thickness: Look for a mug with a thicker wall or base. Thicker ceramics have a higher thermal mass, which allows them to retain heat better.
